Scanner are back after almost a decade with their new album The Cosmic Racewhich lives up to its name in terms of lyrical content.

It tells a dystopian science fiction story about a group of people led by the android Scanner have set off from the dying earth to a new habitable world and have to deal with monsters, other local dangers, but also interpersonal conflicts.

Off into the unknown!

With the Earth Song It starts off crisply with a quick-fingered guitar, and then the bass drum riffs at hyperspeed, which unfortunately sounds a bit clacky, so that every warp drive starts on its own. The singing of Efthimios Ioannidis is charismatic, variable and fits well with the sound of the group. At Gamma Ray or Iron Savior Reminiscent choir parts and catchy guitar melodies and celebratory solos should not be missing, and in the middle part there is even singing in German in a menacingly deep voice about the failure of humanity. A strong entry characterized by varied parts and strong songwriting. See for yourself with the lyric video HERE.

Face the Fight rocks through the cosmos in mid-tempo with pounding riffs and is decorated with a cool solo, whereas Warriors of the Light Things are a little quicker again, with extremely hot guitar parts and an epic chorus, really cool!

Intergalactic diversity

Dance of the Dead Sounds rather doomy, slow and ballad-like, the vocal lines are moving and the chorus is great! But see for yourself, go to the video HERE.
In the following track Scanner’s Law thresh Scanner again at faster than light speed, a spacey banger with great vocals!

With A New Horizon The band then shows their softer side and delivers a successful ballad that is characterized by beautiful acoustic guitar passages and soulfully performed vocal lines – goosebumps are simply inevitable here!

Battlestar Scanner

A marching rhythm leads Farewell to the Sun and rich riffs accompany the powerful vocals Efthimios. The chorus is again very big, but so are the quick dueling guitars of the founding member Axel A.J. Julius and new arrival Dominik Rothe as well as the atmospheric spoken words part in the middle section successfully provide variety.

Space Battalion In keeping with the song title, it shoots mercilessly and guitars, bass and drums fire from all cylinders, while the vocals lead the battalion into battle, enthroned above everything.
The gripping finale has an appropriate name The Last and First in Line and rounds off the album perfectly.

Conclusion
Scanner sound on The Cosmic Race heavy and powerful, without missing their trademarks: excellent guitar riffs and solos, strong vocals and varied songwriting make the album a highlight in the discography of this cult band and a first highlight of the new year 2024! Access! 8,5 / 10
