After the Viagra collapse and the priest’s orgy, the bishop takes his hat off
The Polish Church is currently being rocked by one scandal following another. Now the bishop of the Sosnowiec diocese has submitted his resignation – the Vatican is silent.

A whole series of scandals have rocked the Polish church in recent years.
Now the bishop has announced his resignation.
In addition to an almost fatal Viagra overdose, a murder case also caused a sensation.
The Polish Church is currently going through difficult times. An investigation by the Gazeta Wyborcza newspaper has uncovered a scandal of sexual misconduct, including a gay orgy among priests and a young prostitute who collapsed from a Viagra overdose and almost died because he failed to provide assistance.
Now the bishop of the affected diocese of Sosnowiec has resigned. Pope Francis accepted the resignation by Grzegorz Kaszak on October 24, without giving an official statement. At the same time, a criminal investigation is underway once morest a priest in Kaszak’s diocese named Tomasz Z., in whose apartment a young prostitute took an overdose of Viagra at the end of August. The priest is said to have initially prevented the paramedics from entering the apartment to avoid a scandal – now the police are investigating.
Gay clubs and body discoveries
It is not the first scandal to rock Sosnowiec, a medium-sized diocese in the southwest of the country. In 2010, the interim rector of the Sosnowiec seminary was involved in an altercation at a gay club, but remained in his post for over a year, even following the case became known in the Polish media.
In March 2023, the body of a 26-year-old deacon was discovered with wounds, that implied a crime. According to the local public prosecutor’s office, a 40-year-old priest is said to have been responsible for the murder of the deacon – the man then took his own life. According to prosecutors, the two had had a turbulent relationship for some time, with the priest sending threatening messages to the deacon.
Viagra incident was the last straw
Now the latest scandal surrounding a sexual encounter with potentially fatal consequences has come to the fore. In a statement, Bishop Kaszak said he had asked the pope for permission to resign in a letter dated September 29. Kaszak was appointed in 2009 by the then Pope Benedict XVI. was appointed bishop following briefly serving as deputy head of the Vatican Family Office.
Although the diocese did not provide full details, it essentially confirmed the media reports and acknowledged that an external investigative commission had concluded that Father Tomasz Z. had committed a serious violation of moral norms and his priestly duties.
Tomasz Z. defended himself and described the situation as a deliberate attack on the Church, its clergy and its faithful, aimed at undermining its position, its responsibilities and its mission.
