A pair of luxury sunglasses ended a political career in Norway.

Bjørnar Moxnes, leader of the Norwegian Left Party, has resigned. The 41-year-old politician was caught stealing a pair of sunglasses at Oslo Airport more than a month ago!

A surveillance camera recorded the brazen theft on June 16: when he was in a Hugo Boss shop with his girlfriend, he was trying on a pair of sunglasses. Then he put the glasses on his travel bag. Then he strolled on through the store – and slipped the sunglasses worth more than 100 euros into his left jacket pocket.

But a store detective stopped him leaving the store, and Moxnes had to pay a fine. After surveillance footage of the crime became public, Moxnes called in sick in early July.

► On Monday – a day before he was due to return from sick leave – Moxnes admitted to the theft – and resigned from his post. He wrote on Facebook: “A lot of people have asked me how I might do something so stupid. I’ve asked myself that a lot over the past few weeks. I have no adequate explanation for this.”

A day earlier, the party executive of the Norwegian Left had decided that Marie Sneve Martinussen (37) would take over the post of chairman. Moxnes held this post for eleven years.

Martinussen on Monday condemned both the theft and the way Moxnes handled the scandal, saying he didn’t provide “correct” information regarding the case from the start. She said at a press conference: “I’m angry and disappointed regarding this and I said that to Bjørnar in a very direct way and in clear language.”

However, with Moxnes apologizing and resigning following the scandal, Martinussen’s case is “closed”. The 37-year-old will be party leader until 2024.
