On Thursday at 6:00 p.m. ŁKS Łódź hosted Raków Częstochowa at their home stadium in the Polish Cup. Dawid Szwarga’s team was the favorite in this clash, but was unable to overcome their rivals’ defense. Therefore, overtime was needed to decide the match.

Red card for Janczukowicz. The expert comments

There was a controversial situation there. In the hundredth minute of the game, Piotr Janczukowicz fell in the penalty area after contact with Igor Tudor. The referee decided that the £KS player was pretending and gave him a second yellow card and, consequently, a red card. Janczukowicz did not agree with this decision and during the broadcast he was seen holding the referee twice.

“He did not hit the referee or actively insult him, but such conduct – regardless of its reasons – is absolutely unacceptable,” wrote former judge Rafał Rostkowski in TVP Sports. In his opinion, Janczukowicz would have received a yellow card for this behavior. As he himself admitted, “the ŁKS player deserved at least four cards in this match” and stated that his reaction was reprehensible.

This situation caused a lot of controversy and some people claim that £KS deserved a penalty kick. Rostkowski believes that there was indeed contact between Tudor and Janczukowicz. In his opinion, the ŁKS player should have stopped and signaled the foul, and then perhaps the referee would have consulted VAR to award a penalty kick. The player decided to fall and the referee was entitled to claim that it was a simulation. “This situation shows that – contrary to popular belief in the football community – sometimes it is better not to fall at all, but to report a possible foul or a claim due to an alleged foul to the referee in a way other than by simulating it,” concluded Rostkowski.
