A scandal broke out after the game between Sandhausen and Ulm. The president of the Sandhäuser attacked the referees.

Update from Tuesday, October 10th, 5:20 p.m.: After the Sandhausen President’s attack on the referee team, the club and officials took a stand. As SV Sandhausen reports, Machmeier has admitted his misconduct. However, the incident was exaggerated publicly. For his “unsportsmanlike behavior,” Machmeier “faces an appropriate punishment from the DFB sports courts.”

There was “completely unnecessary contact in the bilateral shoulder and chest area”. However, there was no collision and no one was injured. “The inappropriateness and error of Jürgen Machmeier’s behavior is undisputed,” writes lawyer Christoph Schickhardt in the club statement. The DFB “rightly initiated sports court proceedings”.

First report from Tuesday, October 10th, 4:10 p.m.: Sandhausen – Friday evening, 3rd league – and a scandal! As the German Football Association announced on its homepage, referee Florian Exner and his assistant Jonah Besong were physically attacked after the final whistle of the game between SV Sandhausen and SSV Ulm 1846 – by Sandhäuser president Jürgen Machmeier.

Referee attacked: referees have to go back on the field

“When the referee team left the field and wanted to go to the dressing room, Machmeier pushed the referee backwards with his chest on the way there. The assistant then also received a kick in the upper body from the club president,” the DFB report said.

At that time, there were no Sandhausen security personnel nearby, which is why Exner and his assistants went back onto the lawn. Only there could stewards accompany the referees to their locker room. Lutz Fröhlich, managing director of sports and communications for the DFB referees, condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms and was horrified. “It’s bad enough that referees are repeatedly insulted, defamed, threatened and attacked by spectators. But when a club president physically attacks the referee and his assistant, a new dimension has been reached,” he said.

DFB strongly condemns attacks on referees

The attack is “completely unacceptable” because a president has a clear role model for football in general, but especially for “fair and respectful treatment of referees in this sport.”

Lothar Matthäus also intervened and suggested that Machmeier resign from his position. “You’re angry, you’re disappointed, you’re not satisfied – but of course you don’t attack the referee,” he said in a panel on the pay-TV channel on Sunday Sky. Machmeier should consider whether he is worthy of the office if there are witnesses to the incident.

Sandhausen’s sports director also approaches referees

Before the Sandhausen President’s attack, the club’s sports director, Matthias Imhof, had already entered the pitch after the final whistle and verbally attacked Exner. The referee then showed him the red card. Fröhlich also condemned that. “Such excesses cause massive damage to football’s image,” he said on the DFB homepage. It is not yet known what consequences the attack will have on the referees.

Attacks on referees are not uncommon In Hesse, for example, there were “hundreds of attacks” last year. (msb)
