Buenos Aires: Argentina have signed coach Lionel Scaloni to a new contract two months following winning the World Cup in Qatar. According to the new contract, Scaloni will continue as Argentina’s coach until the 2026 World Cup. Scaloni extended his contract as coach of the national team following meeting with Argentina Football Association president Claudio Tapia on Monday.
Scaloni, who has worn the boots seven times in the Argentina jersey, came to the coaching scene following leaving the field. He took over as the head coach in 2018 following working as the coach of Argentina’s under-20 team and as an assistant coach of the national team.
Scaloni’s first major achievement as coach of the national team was winning Argentina the 2021 Copa America. After this, it was under Scaloni that Argentina defeated Italy in the finals of the Euro Cup and Copa America champions in 2022.
Scaloni’s golden achievement as the coach of the national team was when Argentina won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. After suffering a shock defeat to Saudi Arabia in the first match of the tournament, Argentina and Scoloni bounced back like a phoenix to win the world title. Argentina won the FIFA World Cup following a 36-year hiatus following defeating France in a penalty shootout.
The Argentine team has played 57 matches under Scaloni so far. In this, the team won only 5 games while winning 37 and drawing 15.
