SC Magdeburg: For 4th title at Club World Cup: \”Totally irrelevant\” announcement from Bennet Wiegert

In 2021, 2022 and 2023, the Club World Cup champion was SC Magdeburg! If SCM coach Bennet Wiegert (42) has his way, nothing will change in 2024.

On Friday, the team will not travel to Saudi Arabia as it has done for the past three years, but will fly to Cairo. A total of nine teams will compete in Egypt. Magdeburg will face the California Eagles (USA) in Group C on Saturday (4:30 p.m./Solidsport) and Al Khaleej (Saudi Arabia) on Sunday (2 p.m./Solidsport).

Wiegert says: “Anyone who knows me knows how pathologically ambitious I am when it comes to winning. That will not change at the Super Globe. This is a week in which you can take something away with you.”

The star coach does not want to accept any excuses after the bumpy start to the season (three defeats, three wins, one draw) and the well-known competition from Barcelona and Veszprém.

“Nevertheless, in a week when everything works, you can take something home with you. We managed to do that three times à la bonne heure. We will also try – no matter how big the opponents are – to do it a fourth time. No matter which squad we go there with. It doesn’t matter,” Wiegert clarifies.

After the bitter 24:29 defeat against THW Kiel last Sunday, Magdeburg showed their fighting spirit in the second half of the Champions League on Wednesday evening in the 33:33 match against Aalborg. The stars will need that in Egypt too.

Wiegert praised: “The team showed great morale in the second half and fought against all adversities. Of course, I hope that this doesn’t happen to us only when we feel like we’re up to our necks in water, but that it happens before that too.”

He adds: “But these are our tasks, which we simply have to deal with and which are perhaps also part of the development of a team. We all have little patience in our jobs. I know I’m one of them. But we won’t be hectic, I can promise that.”

Maybe we can calmly win our fourth Club World Cup title in a row…
