SC Cambuur suffers defeat at TOP Oss: 1-0

Last Sunday was a historic day for our club. In Our New Home, the Kooi Stadium, SC Cambuur played a match for the first time. Admittedly not in a fully built and ready stadium. And admittedly not a result that the yellow-blue supporters had hoped and counted on in advance, but after years of uncertainty, insecurity and the necessary bumps along the way, an unprecedented proud and memorable moment for everyone who holds SC Cambuur dear. But tonight no home match in our brand new football temple, but an away day in the Frans Heesen Stadium. In the Osse Kuipje, our previous head coach Sjors Ultee has been in charge since this season. And although the season is still young, the red-whites have had a more than excellent start under his leadership. On the opening day, Excelsior was defeated 3-1 at home and last weekend in Kerkrade against Roda JC a creditable 0-0 was played. Four points from two difficult duels on paper, Tot Ons Plezier Oss would undoubtedly have signed for that in advance.

In the run-up to the visit to TOP Oss, our head coach kept his cards close to his chest. I still have to inform the players about the starting line-up. They have to know that first. Whatever the line-up is: it has to be better than last week.” In the past, duels between TOP Oss and Cambuur were often considered to be goal-rich. Last season, Cambuur managed to wipe out TOP in Oss with 1-8, tonight it was a completely different story. After the disappointment of the loss against Helmond Sport, our yellow-blues suffered damage for the second game in a row. Henk de Jong and his men eventually lost 1-0 after a goalless half-time score.

Cambuur coach Henk de Jong chose to start with Benjamin Pauwels in the Leeuwarden main squad in the third match of the season. Thomas Poll was also given a starting position at left back. In addition, Jeremy van Mullem and Michael de Leeuw also started in Oss. A disappointment was the absence of Bryant Nieling, who was not fit enough to play for the second week in a row. The central defender is still suffering too much from a knee injury. Almost the rest of the selection was fit.

At the Brabant opponent, ‘good old’ Calvin Mac-Intosch was on the bench. In contrast, Sjors Ultee had made one change to his formation compared to the duel in Kerkrade. Former Cambuur player Giovanni Korte replaced Joshua Zimmerman.

Supported by over 200 travelling SCC players, the first feat of arms could be attributed to Cambuur. Silvester van der Water dribbled past Jonathan Mulder in the twelfth minute, but unfortunately did not succeed in placing the ball past goalkeeper Mike Havekotte. Five minutes later, Van der Water came close to the opening goal again. A fine cross from Benjamin Pauwels ended up on the head of the winger, but the TOP Oss goalie made a fine save. Moreover, Milan Smit was annoyingly offside in this attack. This attack by Cambuur clearly deserved a better fate. Silvester van der Water was clearly the most dangerous man on the side of the yellow-blues in the first half hour. But unfortunately he was unable to reward his good performance with a goal. On the other side, Fedde de Jong caused danger in his own penalty area, but fortunately an opening goal for Oss did not materialise. Also in the final phase of the first half the hosts seemed to come to 1-0, but fortunately the goal was disallowed by referee Van den Kerkhof due to a clear foul on goalkeeper Thijs Jansen. As a result the first half ended goalless.

After the break, Remco Balk and Maikel Kieftenbeld made their appearance. Benjamin Pauwels and Nicky Souren remained in the dressing room. The substitute Balk brought Milan Smit into position twice just after the break, but the striker just fell short to open the score. The initiative was increasingly with Cambuur in the second half. In the 64th minute, the red-whites came close to scoring. A cross from Karim Loukili was headed onto the post by Giovanni Korte. Cambuur got away with it, but a little later, the same Korte was there like a shot and still managed to score the 1-0. A real disappointment. Despite the fact that the pressure on the Ossenaren goal was increasingly increased in the remainder of the match, defenders were replaced by attackers, many opportunities presented themselves and six minutes of added time were added, unfortunately no more goals were scored. And as a result, Cambuur has had a false start to the 2024/2025 Kitchen Champion Division season.

Next week, Henk de Jong’s men will have another away match on the program. FC Dordrecht will be waiting at De Krommedijk. Partly due to the collaboration with ‘big brother’ Feyenoord, De Schapenkoppen are once again a team to be reckoned with this season. This season, FC Dordrecht is led by Melvin Boel. The 37-year-old Rotterdammer who comes from Feyenoord is making his debut in professional football. It is up to Henk de Jong’s men to return home to the Drechtstad with a good result.
