Suddenly defender Simon Kindschi (27) appears in front of Zug goalie Leonardo Genoni. The SCB defender shoots and the slightly deflected puck lands in the goal. It is the saving 3:3 equalizer. And thanks to Scherwey’s goal, the Bernese win following being 3-1 down and lead 1-0 in the quarter-final series.

Now Kindschi isn’t someone who invented scoring goals. He had gone 202 NL games without scoring before scoring once more for the first time just over three weeks ago – also in an important win for SCB in Zug. “Even a blind chicken can find a grain,” he said into the MySports microphone at the time. This time he no longer has any cheeky sayings up his sleeve. “Lucky he fell in,” he says with a laugh. “That was very important.”

Sometimes the Davos resident has to pinch himself. He played for Kloten until shortly before Christmas. A club that fought once morest relegation before it became clear that there might be no relegation this season because there were no promotion candidates left from the Swiss League. Kindschi only rarely played for the airport town team, where he had been captain at times in the Swiss League. Unless he was surplus, he usually only got ice time in tiny doses.

Some people asked themselves: How can someone who isn’t enough for Kloten be able to help the SCB?

“A lot depends on whether a coach relies on you”

Kindschi was helped by the fact that he fit exactly into the defender profile that SCB coach Tapola wanted: tall (1.92 m) and not overly interested in offensive play. “I got this chance and was able to show what I can do,” says Kindschi. “It went very well in the first few games and then you gain confidence and can play more once more.”

How did the man who won the 2015 championship with his parent club HCD as an 18-year-old under Del Curto slip from the team in Kloten? “I don’t know whether it took me a little longer to get used to playing in the National League once more following promotion. And that continued. A lot depends on whether a coach relies on you or not.”

In the Swiss League, Kindschi had gotten used to a style with which he would now have no chance even under Tapola: He took part in the offensive game and once recorded 40 points (and 7 goals) and in the year of promotion he scored 35 (9). In the final phase in Zug, when SCB had to take risks, he rediscovered his forward momentum.

“I do my best every day and then we’ll see what happens,” says Kindschi. SCB soon signed a contract for next season.

Kindschi is not the only defensive specialist to score for SCB in Zug. The 1-0 score goes to Swedish bouncer Patrik Nemeth. “Every now and then we get a shot and the puck ends up in the goal,” says Kindschi. “If it’s like this time, we’ll take it even better.”
