There is urgency in Sorbo-Ocagnano to save the chapel of Saint John the Evangelist. Benoit Luiggi, on behalf of this association which is in charge of its safeguarding, points out that this building caught the attention of the archaeologist Geneviève Moracchini-Mazel who cites it in her book The Romanesque churches of Corsica.
A reference that earned this chapel, its inscription to the Historic Monuments in 1976. Saint-Jean was, centuries for centuries, the place of worship of the Sorbu community in Casinca. Many documents attest to it: it was a place of burial. The latest archaeological research conducted by INRAP (National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research) confirmed it.
An association mobilized
Since its creation in 2017, the association has Sanghjuvannina, which brings together the friends of the chapel, has intervened with heritage bodies. Obtaining DRAC (Regional Directorate of Cultural Affairs) and the Corsican community administrative, technical and financial assistance (up to 80 % of the overall cost) for a stimulation and out of the air of the building . Help allocated to the municipality, prime contractor, who instructed the Kapa design office to establish a diagnosis and a restoration project.
The design office rendered its conclusions in 2019 and, since then, the work has been long overdue. This situation challenges President Benoit Luiggi: “Priority seems elsewhere. The DRAC, alerted more than once by us, tells us to wait from the municipality of Sorbo-Ocagnano, the authorization of the work on this historic monument. However, the passing time does not play in favor of the building which, with its ripped roof, remains a stone witness, moving in its solitude. His abandonment would be similar to a desecration, inflicted on Corsica and its history. “
