“We try to take advantage of promotions,” said a father who came to buy school materials for his son this Thursday, August 16. The latter follows a precise list provided by the college to make his purchases. Sportswear, drawing paper, calculator, notebooks, etc. As every year, the establishments ask to be well equipped to follow the period of schooling to come. It is therefore time but above all money that the parents of pupils will spend.

A supply list affected by inflation

“Each year, it increases a little more. And once the start of the school year is over, we are still asked to buy things,” laments a mother. According to the trade union confederation of families, the cost of school supplies has increased by 11.3% compared to last school year. To properly equip a college student for the start of the school year, it would cost 371 euros on average (233 euros for a primary school student and 427 euros for a high school student).

“We made a group purchase, it saves money”

“6 euros for glue sticks is expensive!” exclaims Sandrine, accompanied by her children Juliette and Axel, both educated in Roanne. To better manage her budget, the mother of the family only “buys back what is necessary”. “We keep the schoolbags, the kits, the rulers, the calculator and some pens,” she says. For supplies to buy this year, the student’s mother was able to save money. “We pre-ordered all the notebooks in college. We made a group purchase, it saves money, it’s great,” she explains.

Back-to-school allowance for shopping

For other families, the back-to-school allowance paid on August 16 allows them to make many useful purchases. “The state does help with the back-to-school bonus,” says Audrey, who receives financial aid for two of her children – the back-to-school allowance is means-tested for children aged 6 to 18. years. “It’s a nice sum, we take the opportunity to get them dressed, change their shoes. It’s Christmas for them,” adds the mother.

The price of school supplies increases by around 10% at the start of the school year

For parents of students who have not yet made the annual back-to-school shopping ritual, there are just over two weeks left before classes resume on Monday, September 4.
