Agrishow 2024: SaveFarm AI sensors capture up to 30 images per second to ensure selective spraying in the field

SaveFarm Artificial Intelligence (AI), combined with cost reduction and environmental sustainability, will be one of the highlights of Agrishow 2024, the largest agricultural fair in Brazil and one of the largest in the world, which will be held in Ribeirão Preto (SP), between April 29th and May 3rd. This will be the 29th edition of the event, which is expected to attract 195,000 visitors. On this occasion, the public will be able to see the technologies involved in selective spraying in the field, which uses sensors that capture 30 images per second. Innovation has already guaranteed, in some cases, savings of 98% in the use of herbicides and, on average, the reduction reaches 75.4%.

SaveFarm, developed by Eirene Solutions, has technology that has already recorded a 98% reduction in the use of herbicides.

This is SaveFarm, a Brazilian technology produced by Eirene Solutions. With the integration of sensors, high-resolution cameras, artificial intelligence and image processing, the equipment can be installed on the booms of any common sprayer to make field work more assertive. It works as follows: the equipment reads the soil surface, identifies weeds in the plantation and indicates the precise locations where the application of pesticides is necessary.
The system is coupled with a highly durable stainless steel support.

The cameras are positioned every 1 meter of sprayer boom and control 2 to 4 spray nozzles per camera, with spacings of 50cm, 35cm or 25cm between the nozzles. The sensors read the soil and can analyze 3.3 million images per hour, on each machine.

In total, 27 million pixels are analyzed per second on each machine. Furthermore, inside the sprayer cabin, the control interface screen is installed and configured. Through it, the machine operator can monitor the entire process, receive diagnostics and parameterize the operation through a graphical interface.

Technology is one of the highlights of the largest agricultural fair in Brazil.

According to the company’s CEO, Eduardo Marckmann, the plants that need to receive the agricultural pesticide are studied by technology according to their size. “We can highlight in this system the financial appeal due to the reduction in the use of herbicides with localized application, in addition to the gains in operational yield, reduction in crop phytotoxicity and improvement in the quality of the application”, he states.

In Marckmann’s assessment, among the main advantages of SaveFarm is also the reduction of environmental damage, due to the reduction in the use of agricultural pesticides, which results in less need to discard packaging, in addition to requiring less water. “This shows thinking focused on the much-needed sustainability, as a commitment to more responsible agricultural practices, which is a global demand”, he comments.

Different application scenarios of SaveFarm

This technology developed in Brazil has different modes and scenarios for applying herbicides. In pre-planting selective mode, sensors identify invasive plants as targets through AI. Application in this case occurs in areas without cultivation, which allows application only where there are weeds.

In the biomass selective mode, the system checks weeds even in areas with emerging production. The AI understands which plants have the highest biomass in relation to the cultivated area to ensure selective spraying”, explains the CEO.
In selective mode by morphology, the system recognizes established crops and distinguishes herbs that are outside the cultivation standard, regardless of size, even those that are smaller than the main crop. And in the case of selective pre-harvest mode, the technology analyzes the color of the soybeans at the end of the cycle, which allows the use of varying doses of desiccant depending on the degree of maturation of the plants.
The technology also has the option of spraying over a total area. In this case, the operator can use the valves’ PWM technology for pressure compensation, which maintains the uniformity of the drops, or use the machine’s original system.

New platform

In addition to selective spraying technology, the company also presents at Agrishow an innovation that improves the work of sensors: SaveCloud, a platform that allows producers to have more details regarding the traceability of the system’s operation. Therefore, according to Marckmann, decisions regarding actions in the field regarding spraying are based on data, which makes the work optimized. The platform also has a 3G/4G and Wifi connection in case farms that do not have a connection to the telephone network can synchronize data.

“The main advantages of having the platform next to the sprayer is knowing exactly where, when and how much the equipment is applying and generating savings on the farm, as well as having maps and reports that help in understanding the dispersion of weeds in areas and better control strategies so that they are contained in the midst of production”, he explains.
