Built 1,600 years ago on a string of islands in a marshy area open to the Adriatic Sea, Venice faces a multitude of scourges. If, in the 15th century, vast works were undertaken to fight once morest the progressive silting up of the lagoon, these latter also resulted in an increase in the frequency of floods. Having become a flagship travel destination, the Italian city welcomes millions of tourists each year, which further increases the risk of submersion: the colossal wake of liners and freighters in fact dangerously accelerates the erosion of the neighboring salt marshes, while the many motorboats traveling at high speed on its waterways damage the walls of the canals.
