Save the Children: A nightmare for Lebanon’s children

According to Lebanese health authorities, at least 492 people were killed in Monday’s Israeli airstrikes against villages in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, among them at least 35 children and 58 women.

– We see attacks in dozens of cities, families desperately trying to flee with what they can carry, children crying, terrified by the sound of drones and fighter jets, says Save the Children Country Director Jennifer Moorehead.

Redd Barna estimates based on UN figures that 345,000 children in southern Lebanon are threatened as a result of the fighting.

– Children in Lebanon have felt the crushing fear of a looming war since October last year, and in the last few days their lives have been turned upside down, she says.

– We have employees and partners who have family members who are stuck in the south, with roads destroyed by airstrikes. All schools across the country will be closed starting tomorrow, which will affect around 1.5 million children, says Moorehead.

The Lebanese authorities have converted 89 school buildings into receptions and are trying to the best of their ability to help the war refugees from the south.

– Many of those fleeing are already vulnerable, including women, children and refugees who have lived on the run for months, says Moorehead.
