How does the play *Save/Reload* use multimedia elements to enhance its exploration of mental health?
An Inside Look at “Save/Reload”: Interview with Playwright Dana Aber
As the New York Theater Festival prepares to stage the highly anticipated one-person play Save/Reload, we sat down with Dana Aber, the playwright behind this innovative production. Known for her ability to weave complex mental health themes into compelling narratives, Dana discusses the inspiration, creative process, and unique elements of her latest work.
Q: Dana, thank you for joining us. Can you tell us what inspired the concept of Save/Reload?
dana Aber: Thank you for having me! the idea for Save/Reload actually came from a personal interest with video games and how they can mirror our own lives. I’ve always been intrigued incidentally gamers invest themselves in their avatars, almost as if they’re living a parallel existence. This play explores that obsession, blending it with themes of mental health and the blurred lines between reality and fantasy.
Q: The play delves into the psychological struggles of the protagonist. Why did you choose to focus on mental health through the lens of gaming?
Dana Aber: Gaming, like any immersive activity, can become a coping mechanism or even an escape for people dealing with mental health challenges.I wanted to explore how the protagonist’s fixation on conquering the Shadow King reflects his internal battles. It’s a metaphor for the ways we often retreat into worlds where we feel in control, even as real-life challenges become overwhelming.
Q: The production incorporates multimedia elements, including RPG avatar creation and animation. How did this collaboration come about?
Dana Aber: We were lucky to work with Tony Pugliese, a brilliant artist from Brazil, who brought the gaming world to life on stage. His expertise in avatar creation and animation allowed us to create a visually immersive experiance. Director John Lampe also played a pivotal role in integrating these elements seamlessly into the live performance, making the audience feel like they’re part of the game.
Q: What makes Save/Reload stand out in this year’s New York Theater Festival lineup?
Dana Aber: I think it’s the combination of a deeply personal story with cutting-edge technology. The play doesn’t just tell a story—it invites the audience to experience the protagonist’s journey firsthand. Whether you’re a theater enthusiast or a gamer, there’s somthing in Save/Reload that resonates. It’s a universal tale of perseverance and self-finding.
Q: what do you hope audiences take away from Save/Reload?
Dana Aber: I hope it sparks a conversation about how we navigate reality versus the worlds we create for ourselves. Are we escaping, or are we finding ways to confront our challenges? I’d love for people to leave the theater questioning their own boundaries and reflecting on how they engage with their own “games”—whether they’re video games or the roles we play in everyday life.
Q: Thank you, Dana.as a closing thought, what would you say to someone who’s on the fence about attending the play?
dana Aber: I’d say, give yourself the chance to be transported into a world where the stakes are high, the drama is intense, and the line between fiction and reality is tantalizingly thin. Whether you’re there for the theater, the gaming,or the story,Save/Reload promises to be an unforgettable experience.
