Belgians pay too much for their energy bills, they do not necessarily opt for the operators who have the best offers. Two million households might pay less for their electricity and gas.
Belgian households might choose their energy contract better. This is what emerges from a study by the CREG, the gas and electricity regulation commission.
About two million households can save between €150 and €300 per year on their electricity bill and almost 1,120,000 households can save between €200 and €250 per year on their natural gas bill . These figures are generally up from those of a year ago.
Moreover, the proportion of fixed price contracts has reached a historically low level, with barely 24% of households having a fixed price contract for electricity and 23% for natural gas, whereas before the crisis the contracts landlines accounted for around 65% to even 70% of the market.
The CREG’s analysis of all existing contracts also shows that households who opted for a fixed-price contract before 2022, which has not yet expired today, should keep their contract. This concerns at least 181,000 households for electricity and at least 136,000 households for natural gas.
For fixed products of indefinite duration, the price guarantee is often only valid for one year, following which the supplier can adapt the price formula according to the provisions of the general conditions.
The consumers concerned must, at the end of the price guarantee, compare the new conditions with the market offer. Consumers can terminate their contract at any time, even if it is for an indefinite period, provided they respect a notice period of four weeks.
