The inflation experienced in recent months has pushed up the price of shopping by some 20%, revealed Test-Achats in its last price survey in Belgium, in April. A rise in prices which pushes consumers a little more to cross the border to make their purchases abroad, France in the lead. Test-Achats has decided to check whether crossing the border is really a good deal. A basket of 162 products was compared between Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.

Head to France, the preferred destination for Belgians to make their purchases. On average, the savings made amount to 9%, but they can go up to 19% on international brands. The most significant difference concerns cereal products as well as dairy products (34%). Preserves and other food products also make it possible to make substantial savings, but it is above all in the beverage department that we most often come across our compatriots. And for good reason, the average saving on drinks amounts to 13% and climbs to 64% on a 1.5 liter bottle of Evian.

Good news: the fall in prices continues in supermarkets

Some cheaper products in Belgium

“In general, France is cheaper out of the 162 products we analyzed compared to Luxembourg, Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium. But, not all your shopping is good to do abroad because we remain competitive on a wide range of products, in particular first price products which are 7% cheaper than in France” explains Julie Frère, spokesperson for Test-Achats. “Some private label products are also cheaper, as well as fresh products such as fruit and vegetables (16% cheaper than in France), fish (11%), and meat (8% cheaper than in France 38% cheaper than in Germany). For groceries, olive oil, sunflower oil or even spread are cheaper here, and the difference with France for groceries in general is very low (1%) .”

To counter this inflation without having to make your purchases abroad, Test-Achats recommends turning to distributor brands which are on average 51% cheaper than (inter)national brands, for equivalent quality. The realizable saving is roughly equivalent to a free 1+1 promotion of a well-known (inter)national brand. The organization also advises comparing supermarkets with each other, and always comparing the price per unit, to avoid false maxi-packs or shrinkflation.
