Sooner or later, all the problems come home to roost. And shortcuts, even the most complex ones, don’t always reach checkers. The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, announced in the plenary session in Strasbourg the request for the lifting of immunity for Ilaria Salis presented by the competent Hungarian authorities. A decision, that of the Magyars, which was in the air, but which nevertheless raised a hornet’s nest of controversy. The first to cry scandal was the new star of the sinister firmament. «I sincerely hope that Parliament decides to defend the rule of law, that it defends human rights and that it does not bow to the arrogance of Viktor Orban’s illiberal democracy – Salis pompously stated -. Risk of up to 24 years in prison in a country where there are no minimum conditions for a fair trial. I want to defend myself within a trial that is fair and equitable, which cannot take place in Hungary, and we have had ample proof of this. The continuous attacks against me, obviously pretextual, have the aim of preventing me from carrying out my mandate. And it is no coincidence that the request for the revocation of immunity was sent to the European Parliament on 10 October, the day following my speech in the Chamber against Viktor Orban.”

It should not be forgotten that the candidacy strongly supported by the goal-scoring couple, Nicola Fratoianni and Angelo Bonelli, clearly aimed to avoid prison for the woman who occupied the houses. Others. A humanitarian ploy, which soon transformed into a precise political act, which now risks falling like dominoes. And which is leading some left-wing exponents to put forward bizarre hypotheses to say the least. «Hungary issued a sentence before even holding a trial and this says a lot about respect for the rights of those detained or subjected to trial – said Vittoria Baldino, deputy group leader of the Five Star Movement in Montecitorio -. I would consider Hungary remaining in the EU, given the systematic violation of human rights. Hungary’s request regarding Ilaria Salis is a shameful request.”

Continuous contradiction, immunity is fine if...: Salis, Cruciani overwhelms the left

The MEPs of the League, Susanna Ceccardi and Anna Maria Cisint, did not take the attitude of their Avs colleague well. Who blatantly refused to answer two of their questions. «We wanted to ask her why she agreed to send Matteo Salvini to trial and not to defend herself in a trial. And whether those Hungarian victims, whose heads were smashed, deserve to have a trial to find those responsible.” Last but not least, the champion of social centers has sided against her country, Italy, over the Albanian affair. «With the shameful operation in Albania, of colonial memory, the Italian government became the vanguard of a European attack against migration and law. The attempt, which has so far failed, to outsource detention in a concentration camp on foreign territory and to speed up the procedures for assessing and repatriating migrants represents cruel suffering and humiliation for the people deported on the high seas, treated as expendable humanity” . Who knows if the fear of returning to prison and eating will reactivate the memory of Ilaria Salis, free thanks to the work of diplomacy carried out by a centre-right government which, today as yesterday, she despises and denigrates.
