Saudi student electrocuted in school gym: Family accuses school of failing to provide first aid

During the past two days, Saudi circles have been preoccupied with an incident in which a school student in the Jizan region was electrocuted, amid accusations of failing to provide first aid.

While the family of the student, Sattam Fakih, revealed the details of the incident that her son was exposed to in a school affiliated with the Abu Arish Education Office in Jizan.

The school did not move

The family stated that their son was taken from school to the hospital last Wednesday morning, following he was electrocuted during the fifth physical session while he was in the gym.

She explained that a contact occurred with the cupboard air conditioner due to water leakage, which electrocuted the student until he fell unconscious.

She also added that the school did not move despite the presence of a health guide, but rather summoned the injured person’s brother, who transported him in his private car, according to the “Sabq” newspaper.

She explained that the car of Sattam’s brother, who is a student in the same school in the third intermediate grade, was on fire while they were on their way to the hospital, until passers-by took them.

She also pointed out that the school did not communicate with the student’s guardian at the time of the accident, and that it was aware of the existence of an electrical fault in the gym a few weeks ago, and that no safety and prevention measures were taken.

It also claimed that the school’s health counselor did not perform first aid measures to limit the student’s access to critical complications.

In addition, the family announced that their injured son is currently in intensive care in a coma, and his condition is critical, and he is in Prince Muhammad bin Nasser Hospital.

The authorities get involved

It is noteworthy that the official spokesman for the General Administration of Education in the Jazan region, Rajaa Al-Attas, had announced that the administration followed up what one of its students was subjected to last Wednesday followingnoon, following the Education Office was informed that he had suffered an electric short during the school day in the gymnasium of one of the schools affiliated with the Education Office in Abu Arish. Take him immediately to the hospital for treatment. The spokesman indicated that the General Administration of Education in Jazan region took the initiative to check on the student’s health condition.

He also directed the Director General of Education in the region to investigate the circumstances of the incident and its causes urgently, and to submit the necessary results and recommendations in this regard through the assigned committees that commenced their work.
