The world’s largest oil company, Saudi Aramco, announced that it produced the first cubic meters of gas at its giant unconventional gas development, South Ghawar, two months ahead of schedule. This is a key development for the company’s strategy to increase gas production by more than half from 2021 levels through 2030, subject to domestic demand.
The South Ghawar Block It has infrastructure to process nearly 8.5 million cubic meters per day and regarding 38,000 barrels of oil daily.
“This first unconventional tight gas production from South Ghawar It is a milestone that demonstrates real progress in our gas expansion strategy. We believe it has a role to play in meeting the Kingdom’s needs for low-emission energy and supporting growth in the chemicals sector,” said Saudi Aramco Upstream Segment President Nasir Al-Naimi.
21.3 million cubic meters per day is the production that South Ghawar will deliver in the short term.
In line with the growing demand for gas, the company confirmed that it will continue its work to “more than double” overall processing capacity. The strategic objective for South Ghawar is to achieve the production of regarding 21.3 million cubic meters of gas per dayin the short term.
“The ability to begin production two months ahead of schedule and under budget is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our people and their determination to continually improve our Upstream operations,” added Al-Naimi.
The successful production of tight gas at South Ghawar represents the Aramco’s second unconventional gas stream, following production began at the North Arabia field in 2018 with the delivery of 6.7 million cubic meters per day to customers in Wa’ad Al-Shamal. At the same time, work is progressing on the gigantic Jafurah unconventional gas field, which is the largest liquid-rich shale gas field in the Middle East.
