Saudi Arabia’s Call for Immediate End to Gaza Embargo: Intensified Demands Amid Israel-Hamas Conflict

RIYADH: Saudi Arabia has intensified its demand for an immediate withdrawal of the embargo imposed on Gaza, including water, electricity and food items, amid the escalation of the Israel-Hamas conflict. Speaking on the phone with the presidents of France, Iran and Turkey, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman stressed the need to end the conflict and restore peace to the region.

In a phone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday night, the crown prince emphasized the urgent need to lift the blockade on Gaza. Much of the conversation focused on the ongoing military deployment in and around Gaza. The Crown Prince emphasized the need for immediate intervention to stop military operations that cost innocent lives.

He reiterated the country’s commitment to activate communication efforts to de-escalate the conflict, while referring to the need to comply with international humanitarian law, including the crucial aspect of lifting the blockade against Gaza. Earlier, the Crown Prince had also spoken to Iran’s President Ibrahim Raisi over the phone about Israel’s military polarization in Gaza. In his first phone conversation with President Raisi since the restoration of Iran-Saudi relations, the Crown Prince expressed the country’s commitment to activating international and regional efforts to end the escalating crisis. He expressed Saudi Arabia’s strong opposition to the targeting of civilians and the tragic loss of innocent lives. Emphasizing the position that everyone is bound to adhere to the principles of international humanitarian law, he expressed deep concern over the deteriorating situation of the people of Gaza and its serious impact on human lives. He clarified that urgent intervention should be done to ease the crisis and friendly nations should move together for that.

At the same time, the Crown Prince reiterated the country’s unwavering stance in standing up for the cause of Palestine. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also spoke on the phone on Wednesday night. The two leaders discussed the current military deployment in and around Gaza. The Crown Prince emphasized that Saudi Arabia is making intensive efforts to move all together through regional and international communications to prevent the ongoing conflict. He reiterated that the country’s position is to reject violence that targets civilians and takes innocent lives. He also stressed the need to adhere to the principles of international humanitarian law and to end the offensive in the Gaza Strip.

The Crown Prince also noted the country’s firm position to support the Palestinian cause and efforts aimed at achieving a comprehensive and just peace that guarantees the legitimate rights of the Palestinian people.
