Saudi Arabia’s $1.2 Billion Financial Assistance to Stabilize Yemen’s Economy

The Saudi government on Tuesday announced its decision to provide $1.2 billion in financial assistance to internationally recognized authorities in Yemen to support the country’s struggling economy.

Saudi Arabia said in a statement that the financial support was part of its ongoing efforts to help stabilize food prices in Yemen, close its budget deficit and support the payment of salaries.

For more than 8 years, Yemen has been the scene of a civil war which has had the consequences of ravaging its economy, driving up food prices and pushing half the population to the brink of starvation.

As a reminder, war broke out in Yemen in 2014 when Houthi insurgents backed by Tehran took control of the capital, Sanaa, as well as a significant part of northern Yemeni territory, forcing the internationally recognized government to exile.

A military coalition under Saudi command then intervened from 2015 to try to restore the fallen Yemeni authorities.
