Saudi Arabia wants to become a nuclear power if its regional rival Iran acquires the atomic bomb. Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman made this clear on Wednesday in an interview with the US television channel Fox News. If Tehran has the bomb, “then we have to get one too,” said the strong man of the Arab leadership. Despite a recent detente, Tehran and Riyadh are fighting for supremacy in the Middle East.
Saudi Arabia is currently also trying to get closer to Israel, which feels its existence is threatened by Iran’s nuclear program. “With every day that passes, we get closer to peace and normalization with Israel,” the Saudi Arabian crown prince said in the Fox News interview.
Israel is currently the only known nuclear power in the region, although it does not officially admit it. Iran’s nuclear program was supposed to be limited by a control agreement concluded in Vienna in 2015, but it became a waste of time when Washington’s withdrawal from the deal was announced by later US President Donald Trump in 2018. The mullah regime in Tehran is one of Moscow’s supporters in the current Russian war of conquest in Ukraine. Saudi Arabia is a long-time U.S. ally but is colluding with Russia to keep oil prices high.
