Jeddah: The Saudi Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority has announced that duty-free shops operating at airports, land and port border checkpoints in Saudi Arabia are not allowed to sell alcohol. The authority’s explanation is in response to a question raised on the authority’s Twitter handle in this regard. The authority also clarified that this decision is in accordance with the rules for setting up duty free shops in the country. According to the rules and regulations for setting up duty free markets, only goods and products which are allowed to be traded in the country will be allowed in the duty free markets and hence sale of liquor will not be allowed here, the authority said.

Relaxation in rules for duty free markets

Officials also informed that the authority has set up procedures for establishing duty-free markets at air, sea and land ports in accordance with the Uniform Customs Law for GCC countries, which contains provisions related to the operation of duty-free markets. The new law announces further relaxations in the current provisions relating to duty-free markets. Free markets will be allowed at the country’s airports, land and sea borders. Officials said that this will provide an opportunity to make the products in the international market available in the market through the market. The cabinet meeting had earlier decided to set up duty free shops for those entering and exiting the country as per requirement. Shops will be set up in more centres

Duty free shops are currently operating in the passenger halls of departure terminals at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh, King Fahd International Airport in Dammam and Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Airport in Madinah. In the context of the new concessions, duty-free shops will be opened at more points of entry in coordination with various departments at airports and ports as needed. Duty free shops are exempted from customs duties and other taxes under the Free Market Act of the Uniform Customs Act. The authority also clarified that the level of tax reduction will vary from country to country depending on the location of the duty free shops.
