The Supreme Court of Saudi Arabia has announced that Eid al-Fitr will fall on Wednesday (10/4). A number of countries on the Arabian Peninsula will also observe 1 Shawwal on the same day.

Based on a lunar system with 12 months, the Islamic calendar designates Ramadan as the ninth month, which then culminates in Eid al-Fitr.

“The Supreme Court declared tomorrow the last day of #Ramadan and Wednesday as the first day of #Eid al-Fitr,” said an official statement from the Saudi Press Agency.

Saudi media reported that the crescent moon was not visible on Monday (8/4). The United Arab Emirates and Qatar also announced that Eid al-Fitr will start on Wednesday (10/4).

Saudis are expected to celebrate Eid al-Fitr for four days. Saudi Minister of Islamic Affairs, Da’wah and Guidance Sheikh Abdullatif Al-Asheikh has also issued a directive to hold Eid prayers 15 minutes after sunrise according to the Umm Al-Qura calendar.

In his circular, Al-Asheikh said prayers must be performed in designated open areas, as well as in all mosques.

Qatar has also confirmed that Tuesday (9/4), will be the last day of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated one day after, namely Wednesday (10/4). Bahrain also celebrates the first day of Eid al-Fitr on the same day.

Kuwait has also announced that April 9 will be the last day of Ramadan and Wednesday the first day of Shawwal. The Australian peninsula officially announced Wednesday as the first day of Eid al-Fitr, marking the start of the month of Shawwal.

Based on local and global observatory observations, the Australian Fatwa Council confirmed that the new moon will appear on Tuesday (9/4), at a certain time in Sydney and Perth. Thus, Tuesday is the last day of Ramadan, and Eid al-Fitr falls on Wednesday (10/4).

The Fatwa Council stated that determining the date of Eid al-Fitr is based on calculating the birth of the moon before sunset, the length of time the moon sets after sunset, and the possibility of the moon being visible. This method is in line with the approach adopted by the leading global council of scholars.
