Olivia Grégoire, Minister for Commerce, announced Tuesday evening that restaurant vouchers can still be used in 2024 for all food shopping, while the list of eligible products was to be shortened on January 1, 2024. A change of direction welcomed with enthusiasm in the La Défense district.
It’s an regarding-face that delights the five million French people who hold restaurant vouchers. The exemption which allowed the use of these vouchers to pay for all food purchases at the supermarket was due to end on December 31, but the deadline was finally postponed. Tuesday evening, on M6, Olivia Grégoire, Minister Delegate in charge of Trade, assured that “nothing [changerait] for the French in 2024”.
In the La Défense business district, near Paris, the news is satisfactory. Ernest, for example, uses his meal vouchers every day to buy his meal. “It helps because it’s expensive to eat out, especially here in La Défense. Taking money out of your account every day to be able to eat still adds up to a budget.”
Less enthusiastic restaurateurs
On the other hand, restaurateurs see a downside, because they would have liked these meal vouchers to no longer be used to purchase all kinds of food products. Claire is the owner of a Lebanese restaurant. “It would have been more beneficial for us and it would have made business work better. We would have had many more customers,” she regrets. The workers who benefit from it are therefore very attached to this means of payment which helps support their purchasing power.
