Why do Satanists oppose HB 931?

Satanists led by Lucien Greaves and Malcolm Jerry spread their beliefs through rationalism.

They were founded in 2013 and currently have recognition from the United States government as a Church.

The signing of HB 931 allows religious groups to participate in the promotion of their beliefs.

What did Governor Ron DeSantis declare?

Gov. Ron DeSantis said he would not allow Satanic chaplains to participate in the program, saying they are not a legitimate religion.

To which Lucien Greaves, one of the founders, responded: “Either he is ignorant of the fundamental rights of the constitution or he is too incompetent to care. Ron DeSantis fails to recognize that it is not the government’s place to grant unique rights to one religious identity while denying them to others.”

Finally, Greaves concluded by saying that if the state of Florida does not allow him to participate, he will take legal action.

“There was nothing written in the law that excluded us. You can’t just declare something like that by decree and expect it to be treated as law, and if you don’t understand it, which is probably not the case, you obviously have no place as governor,” he said.

Who are the Satanists?

The Satanic Temple is a non-theistic religious organization founded by Malcolm Jarry and Lucien Greaves in 2013 and based in Salem, Massachusetts.

It received recognition as a religious organization in the United States in 2019 and currently has more than 700,000 followers.

His thinking is based on the separation between Church and State, rationalism, skepticism, Human Rights and the rights of minorities.
