Sargassum algae: residents of the François evaluate the effectiveness of their experimental dam 5 years later

2023-09-10 22:30:53

As in several other municipalities in Martinique, residents of the Frégate 2 district in François are exasperated by the regular invasion of sargassum at their doors. 5 years following having financed a net supposed to repel these algae which are harmful to health and the interior of the habitat, these local residents take stock of this installation and the setbacks caused.

5 years ago, several residents of the Frégate 2 district in Le François financed a first experimental dam to try to keep unwanted algae at bay.

As in several other seaside towns on the island, this sargassum causes many problems for local residents, in terms of health and deterioration of their household and audiovisual appliances.

“It’s always the same” explains a Franciscan whose television often malfunctions. She also fears the impact of gas fumes on her roof.

To try to fight more effectively once morest the stranding of plants which have periodically arrived from the sea in waves for more than 10 years, new, more efficient equipment is expected for 2024 in the small bay. It will be entirely financed by the public authorities.
