ALGIERS – The prices of blue surface fish, particularly sardines, are constantly falling in several wilayas, thanks to the “continuous and progressive improvement of production”, indicated the director of control of fishing activities, aquaculture and market regulation, at the Ministry of Fisheries and Fish Products.
In a statement to APS, Mr. Abderrahmane Hentour stressed that “for more than 10 days, the production of blue fish has seen a continuous and progressive improvement, with considerable landings in several ports”, which has had a positive impact on the prices of these products, amid consumer enthusiasm for this variety of fish.
He added that despite the delay in the blue fish availability season this year, which usually begins in mid-May, the ports of the wilayas of Ain Temouchent, Chlef, Tipaza, and relatively less those of Algiers and Boumerdes, have seen “very significant” blue fish landings.
The same official cited as an example, “a landing in the ports of Ain Temouchent, in a single day, of 1,000 tons of blue surface fish”, which led, according to him, to an overabundance in the marketing and distribution chain in the region, “which had a positive impact on prices which fluctuated between 250 and 500 DA”.
Mr. Hentour also stressed that the ministry’s statistics show that “an average monthly production of blue fish varying between 3,000 and 7,000 tonnes allows prices to be stabilized between 300 and 400 DA/kg.”
On another point, the same official noted that the Ministry of Fisheries and Fish Products is working to strengthen coordination with trade services in order to guarantee the security of commercial circuits and avoid any imbalance in distribution networks, highlighting the role played by mixed control brigades in this chapter.
On its official page on one of the social networks, the Ministry of Fisheries and Fish Products published news and photos of an abundant fishing campaign of blue fish in several ports, highlighting ”a landing at the port of Ghazaouet in the wilaya of Tlemcen of more than 21 tons, where the price of sardines, upon landing, varied between 150 and 250 DA”.
The ministry also shared the first landing estimated at 52 tons of blue fish at the port of Mostaganem, as well as a second landing estimated at 75 tons, with prices for sardines ranging between 250 and 350 DA.
As a reminder, the production of blue fish such as sardines, bogue and saurel, among others, represents 80% of annual fishing products in Algeria.
The average annual fish production is around 100,000 tonnes, according to data from the Ministry of Fisheries and Fish Products.
