Indonesian para-athlete Saptoyogo Purnomo won a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympics after recording a time 11.26 seconds in the final of the men’s 100 meters, T37 classification, Saturday (31/8) WIB.

Quoted from the official statement of the Indonesian Paralympic Committee (NPC), Saptoyogo was actually only burdened with the target of a bronze medal at the 2024 Paralympics or the same as the medal he won at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics.

In the qualifying round, Saptoyogo was also in third place with a time of 11.35 seconds. He was behind two Brazilian representatives, Ricardo Gomes de Mendonca (11.07 detik) and Edson Cavalcante Pinheiro (11.33 detik).

However, in the final match, Saptoyogo was able to improve his time to 11.26 seconds. Meanwhile, Gomes maintained his time at the number 11.07 seconds.

A time of 11.26 seconds ensured Saptoyogo won the silver medal, while breaking the Asian record he set at the 2022 Asian Para Games.

At that time, Saptoyogo won the gold medal with a time of 11.28 seconds. “I was down because there were new opponents and I…I don’t know their best time, but I am determined to do my best to win this medal,” said Saptoyogo.

The rain that poured down on Stade de France also made him worried. For the T37 classification, the rain that made the air cold could affect the performance of the hand and leg muscles.

“I didn’t expect to break my personal record because of the situation. rain. When it rains it can be less than optimal because it can affect the muscles in the legs. or hand. So I’m just optimistic to win a medal,” he said. (M-3)
