On Sunday, the streets of the city of Luanda, the Angolan capital, will be brightened up with the athletics festival, in the name of São Silvestre, a 10 km end-of-year race, which features national and foreign long distance runners, starting from Largo da Mutamba, where the starting gun will be given at 17:00. The goal cutoff will be at Estádio dos Coqueiros
On the last day of the year, the city of Luanda will host the São Silvestre pedestrian race, a 10 km event featuring the best national and foreign distance runners. Because of this, the organization has its machine in tune and has the support of the Provincial Government of Luanda, the Ministry of the Interior, Health and other public and private partners.
To make the party attractive, the organization carried out the last inspection of the route this week with technicians from the Angolan Athletics Federation. São Silvestre is an international event in which the best long distance runners in the world of both sexes have paraded. Still, the tradition does not die, since athletics, with good or bad conditions for its practice, Luanda, Huíla, Namibe, Benguela and Huambo have given their air of grace.
In this edition, the race features national and foreign athletes, and it is certain that there will be a close race, because local distance runners, as time passes, take over the party. Severino Vicente, Elias Dumbo, António Teko, Augusto Diogo and others only think regarding triumph, so they work with success in mind.
The race, which has been contested since 1954, when Angola was a colony, suffered only two interruptions, that is, in 1961 and in 1978. Therefore, in 2021 it was contested the following year due to Covid-19. Last year, Kenyan Raphael Olekei reached the podium, but in the women’s class, Angolan Ernestina Paulina took first place, beating competition from national and foreign distance runners.
In turn, the president of the Angolan Athletics Federation, Bernardo João, is satisfied with the level of organization of the event. The person in charge is at ease as the Provincial Government’s technical team continues to work smoothly.
