“sanitizing at home and in the surrounding area is for the health of populations”

As announced by the Guinean authorities, the sanitation operation in the city of Conakry was effectively launched this Saturday, August 06, 2022. This initiative, which consists of ridding the city of piles of rubbish, was widely followed in the commune of Kaloum where almost all activities were stopped throughout the morning. The governor of Conakry and all her staff, the mayor of the commune and all the advisers and security agents have all deployed on the ground to set an example. General M’Mah Hawa Sylla alerts on the interest for the populations to clean up their living environment, noted on the spot Guineematin.com through one of its reporters.

In the commune of Kaloum, the governor of the city of Conakry in the company of several executives of her service as well as all the commercial advisers stormed the streets and other public spaces for the start of the sanitation works. Communal guards, soldiers, gendarmes and several other sanitation actors took part in this sanitation operation.

In front of the town hall of Kaloum where the first sweep was given, it was Mayor Gassim Soumah who directed the work before making a tour of the various districts of the administrative center. Talking regarding this sanitation campaign, he will say that without cleanliness, health problems will remain.

Gassim Soumah, mayor of the municipality of Kaloum

“In the past, everywhere you go, the city is dirty. To solve this problem, the President of the Republic recently instructed all the members of the government in full Council of Ministers to go on the ground to clean up the city. It gave a result. Now, why not continue on this momentum to sustain this clean-up operation by putting in place the necessary provisions? Today, therefore, as you have seen, all the measures have been taken for the official launch of the sanitation works in the city of Conakry. We, for example, at the level of the municipality of Kaloum, we all went out to go into the field… We are going to build hospitals, train doctors. But if we don’t take care of the cleanliness of our city, be sure, the public health problem will always remain unsolved. I therefore ask all citizens of Kaloum to make sanitation a priority. As far as the town hall of Kaloum is concerned, we will do our best in relation with all the actors of sanitation so that this initiative is beneficial to all”.

The Governor of Conakry, General M’Mah Hawa Sylla, began sanitation work at her home and then at her neighbors’ with her collaborators and several other women vendors. Then, she criss-crossed several famous black spots in the municipality of Kaloum. For her, this clean-up operation consists in encouraging everyone to take ownership of this initiative of the President of the transition.

“This Saturday’s sanitation day is not only regarding cleaning up the city of Conakry but also and above all regarding giving courage to all citizens to take ownership of the thing to help improve public health. Because, sanitation is not done for an authority, nor for the State. Sanitation is for everyone. Everyone does for themselves. On this occasion, I ask all the populations of the city of Conakry and its outskirts to adhere to the idea of the Head of State which consists in making the city of Conakry clean. Garbage should not be the neighbors of man. Sanitizing at home and around is for the health of populations, ”she suggested.

Abdoulaye Savane, general coordinator of ANASP-Kaloum

An activity that delights Abdoulaye Savané, general coordinator of the National Agency for Sanitation and Public Health (ANASP) on behalf of the municipality of Kaloum. “Today I have a feeling of joy and moral comfort in relation to the holding of this sanitation day in the city of Conakry. Today, if you see that this sanitation day has been launched, it is to strengthen the capacities of sanitation actors in the field in general and in particular the national agency for sanitation and public health. Don’t forget also that the ANASP is the focal point for sanitation in the city of Conakry. So, the launch of this sanitation day is to moralize people regarding waste management. When we know that dirt is our enemy and that it is necessary to fight waste, everyone will understand that sanitation is a noble and appreciable job. I think that if everyone is well informed and aware of the need to make our city clean, this operation will have positive impacts on the city of all citizens. Whoever wants the health of his population fights in terms of solid waste management,” said Abdoulaye Savané.
