Direct red in Winterthur, now yellow-red in Manchester: Because Sandro Lauper was sent off again in the 3-0 defeat against Manchester City, the Bernese defensive specialist will not play his next serious battle until December 3rd at the earliest in the home game against Servette. At the Winterthur Schützenwiese he hit opponent Tobias Schättin with an open sole, at the Etihad Stadium he first fouled Matheus Nunes quite impetuously in his own penalty area (19th) and later knocked Nathan Aké off his feet (53rd).
The 27-year-old was suspended for two games for the foul in the Super League. While YB could theoretically challenge the ban in the league, but will not do so, there will now be a game ban for the yellow-red team from UEFA. If you take a look at the Swiss champion’s schedule, it’s clear: Lauper will no longer play a competitive game in November.
Why didn’t Wicky replace him?
This is how it happens: Lauper will not be allowed to take part in the game on Saturday against Lucerne. Then there is another national break. This will be followed by the top game against FCZ and, above all, the Champions League showdown against Red Star Belgrade. Lauper also has to sit out both games.
Against this background, the question arises as to whether coach Raphaël Wicky shouldn’t have replaced one of his top performers in Manchester before the second yellow. The Valais himself admits: “Yes, it was probably a mistake to let him in.” He had thought about replacing Lauper at halftime, but wanted to leave him in for a few more minutes. Expensive minutes for Lauper and the Young Boys, as it turned out a little later.
Lauper himself was not prepared to comment after the game.
