As storage requirements continue to become increasingly demanding, manufacturers are trying to meet these demands with high-capacity devices, such as Samsung’s new EVO Select and Plus microSD cards.
Western Digital recently showed off a preview of its SanDisk Extreme PRO SD card, which has an impressive 4TB capacity as its biggest advantage. For notebooks or cameras that have SD card slots and require high data transfer, this is excellent news.
A preview of these high-capacity SD cards doesn’t mean the SanDisk Extreme PRO will be immediately available for purchase, as Western Digital has stated that they won’t be released until 2025. As for speeds, AnandTech found that the card supports the Ultra High Speed standard -I (UHS-I), which can achieve data transfers of up to 104 MB/s in UHS104 (SDR104) mode.
The 4TB SD card also has minimum sequential write speeds of 30MB/s, which is sufficient for 8K video recording. Unfortunately, comparing this card to a SATA III SSD ends up being unfair, as previous generation solid state drives can peak at 550 MB/s. We won’t mention M.2 NVMe drives because they aren’t even on the same performance level.
However, if you need to expand your notebook’s storage and are out of space to add additional drives, a 4TB SD card may end up meeting your need. However, we are forgetting an important factor that can change consumers’ opinions: price. A 256 GB Extreme PRO SD card from SanDisk costs around R$1,100 reais in Brazil. Just imagine how much the 4TB version will cost.
When they are released in 2025, they may not be found for less than US$500 on the international market.
