Running on sand is considered more difficult compared to running on the road as the surface is not as flat. However, it can help you improve your endurance and leg strength as the level of difficulty increases and more effort is required.
And, on top of that, your mood is expected to soar. Undoubtedly, running on the sand gives you a greater sense of freedom, especially when you hear the lapping of the waves next to you.
And another benefit is that as soon as you finish your workout, you have the possibility to dive into the sea to relax and cool off.
Start on wet sand: It is better to start running on wet sand, which is more stable than soft and dry. Once you get used to running in wet sand, slowly add 2 or 3 minute intervals to drier, returning to wet in between. Once you start to get used to running on dry sand, start running on it, covering longer distances.
Choose flat ground: When running on a sloping beach, there is a risk of injury. Therefore, there is a possibility that you will lose your balance more easily. For this reason, it is better to choose a beach that is relatively flat.
Keep a steady pace: Running on the beach, as we mentioned at the beginning, is even harder than the treadmill at the gym. Your heart rate is going to get faster and your leg muscles are going to work harder, so the important thing is to keep a steady pace. That is why it is important to warm up beforehand and, at first, run slowly, until our body adapts to the new conditions.
Drink enough water: It is important to drink enough water, especially if you are running under the hot sun. Therefore, proper hydration is vital to avoid getting exhausted quickly and experiencing dizziness or intense fatigue.
Run in shoes: There are dozens of shock-absorbing sneakers that offer comfort to your feet. It may seem like a tempting idea to run barefoot on the sand, however, shoes will prevent you from suffering a sprained ankle or Achilles heel injury. At the same time, running with shoes also offers you more protection, ensuring that you will not be injured by any broken glasses or pebbles that are usually found in the sand.
