Sanchez’s reversal, a “diplomatic blunder”

The recent change of position of the Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sanchez regarding the Sahrawi question is a “diplomatic blunder”, affirmed Isaias Barrenada, professor of international relations at the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM).

In a statement to the Spanish newspaper “Publico”, Isaias Barrenada assured that Pedro Sanchez’s reversal on the Saharawi question was a “diplomatic blunder”, criticizing both the Prime Minister and the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares.

“Either they don’t know the practices, or they had an arrogant attitude in decision-making, or they miscalculated,” he lamented.

Noting that the change in the position of the Spanish government intervened in a context marked by the normalization of relations between Morocco and the Zionist entity, the professor insisted on the repercussions of Madrid’s decision on its relations with Algeria.

“Not understanding that this decision has consequences is a blunder, it is a gross mistake on the part of Spanish foreign policy,” he observed.

Algeria decided on Wednesday to proceed with the “immediate” suspension of the Treaty of Friendship, Good Neighborliness and Cooperation that it concluded on October 8, 2002 with the Kingdom of Spain.

The People’s Party (PP, opposition) said Thursday that the suspension of this treaty, “consequence of the absence of a state policy” on the side of Madrid, is “very bad news” for the Spaniards.
