Sanchez will evaluate whether to resign from the Presidency after the complaint against his wife

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has decided to cancel his public agenda for a few days to consider his possible resignation as head of the Executive following the accusation once morest his wife, Begoña Gómez, for alleged corruption.

Through social media X, Sánchez shared a letter to citizens where he explains that he needs to “stop and reflect on whether I should continue to lead the Government or resign from this high honour”. He will announce his decision on 29 April.

“It is not usual for me to write to you in a letter. However, the seriousness of the attacks that my wife and I are receiving, and the need to give a calm response, make me think that this is the best way to express my opinion,” the president begins the text.

“As you may already know, and if not I will inform you, a court in Madrid has opened preliminary proceedings once morest my wife, Begoña Gómez, at the request of a far-right organisation called Manos Limpias, to investigate alleged crimes of influence peddling and corruption in business,” he continues to explain in the letter.

In light of this, she indicated that the judge will call the heads of two digital newspapers that have been publishing on this matter to testify. “In my opinion, they are media with a marked right-wing and far-right orientation. Naturally, Begoña will defend her integrity and will collaborate with Justice in everything that is required of her to clarify facts that are as scandalous in appearance as they are non-existent.”

She stressed that Manos Limpias’ complaint is based on “alleged information from the aforementioned constellation of ultra-conservative newspapers. I emphasize the term “alleged information” because, following its publication, we have been denying the falsehoods that were spread, while Begoña has taken legal action to get those same newspapers to rectify what we maintain is spurious information.”

He also stated that this strategy of harassment and destruction has been going on for months. “Therefore, I am not surprised by the overreaction of Mr. Feijóo and Mr. Abascal. In this serious and crude outrage, both are necessary collaborators along with an ultra-right digital galaxy and the Manos Limpias organization.”

“In fact, it was Mr. Feijóo who reported the case to the Office of Conflict of Interest, requesting that I be banned from holding public office for 5 to 10 years,” he added.
