Sanchez’s re-election is controversial across the country because it is linked to an amnesty for Catalan separatists. Sánchez has been in charge of the EU’s fourth-largest economy since mid-2018.
In the early parliamentary elections on July 23, the PSOE only came second behind the conservative People’s Party (PP) led by opposition leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo. Feijóo’s candidacy was rejected by the lower house at the end of September.
Unlike Feijóo, who wanted to work with the right-wing populists from Vox, Sánchez gathered sufficient support from other parties before the vote. However, his promise of an amnesty for Catalan separatists caused violent protests from the conservative and right-wing populist opposition. Opponents argue that the rule of law, democracy and the unity of the country are in danger.
