Major League Soccer is growing. As the 30th team, a franchise from San Diego will expand the North American soccer league starting in the 2025 season. As reported by the AFP news agency, the British-Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Mansour is buying the license for a record sum of 500 million US dollars.

The team will play its home games at the newly built 35,000-seat Snapdragon Stadium, which is also home to the San Diego Aztecs college football team and the San Diego Wave women’s football team.

The name of the footballers from the Californian metropolis has not yet been decided. The team will join the San Jose Earthquakes, Los Angeles Galaxy and Los Angeles Football Club as the fourth from the West Coast state.

In the course of the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico, Major League Soccer is also growing. Charlotte FC paid the previous record amount for an MLS license in 2019 ($325 million).

In 1996, when the MLS started, entry to the league cost only five million dollars. Las Vegas, Sacramento, Detroit, Phoenix and Tampa are also possible new MLS locations.
