Daniel Haniß will now probably say little or nothing to enthusiastic core fans of all kinds, but this is the case ELECTRIC CALLBOY Guitarist and co-founder, who lives somewhat in the shadows behind Nico and Kevin – and perhaps also jungle camp drummer David Friedrich. But that’s over now, because with SAMURAI PIZZA CATS He and his new colleagues and various guest singers are preparing to conquer the metalcore world once once more.
The group has been more than just an insider tip on Spotify and YouTube at least since the great preliminary single “Pizza Homicide” with its no less entertaining video including a guest contribution by EC-Nico Sallach. But they also drew attention with other songs and announced a tour in support of the now available debut “You’re Hellcome”. ANNISOKAY and even announced a double-headliner tour next year with THE BUTCHER SISTERS (TBS). That’s what I call a dream start.
But what can the debut of the fun death metal rap trancecore group do with the crazy name, which, by the way, is inspired by the short-lived Japno anime of the early 90s? The album definitely has it all, offering a lot of fun, action, hit candidates and catchy tunes in just over half an hour and also a very unique sound that is difficult to compare. Of course, when it comes to humor and synths, there are cross-references to the Callboys, but Haniß and his boys skilfully try to create their own charm and sound and they succeed. Furious drum attacks, staccato parts and violent shouts from Sebastian Fischer, who already gained experience with drummer Stefan Buchwald with FALL OF GAIA, also meet anthemic choruses that always invite you to sing along, often dark, flat to atmospheric synths and memorable melodies.
In addition to the super hit mentioned, the opener “The Wolf In Me” also stands out. It comes out of the speakers with a menacing slowness, creates a dense atmosphere and explodes in an anthemic chorus. After that, “Outcast” pushes the electronic part further into the foreground and “Last Player” is an angry deathcore projectile that is appropriately dedicated to the legendary Doomslayer. Even if the harder parts are really ripping and well produced, they are often similar, but the SPC can still counteract this with the different clean parts. They didn’t want to leave anything to chance and loaded it too FUTURE PALACE Front singer Maria Lessig takes part in the more modern “Freakshow”, lets FIT FOR A KING’s Almah Alizadeh roar along on the upbeat title track and surprises with a guest appearance by German rapper and Berlin – Tag & Nacht actress Nina Chartier on the angry “Alpha”.
But as mentioned, you can also do catchy songs quite well and so “Have A GOOD Day” has a few almost cheesy vocals in the chorus, “Kill It” invites you to sing-a-long and with “Fake” it becomes really anthemic once more . Nevertheless, the deathcore trademarks are repeatedly ignited here.
The SAMURAI PIZZA CATS don’t deliver the super hit they were hoping for with “You’re Hellcome”, but for a debut the song is more than decent and manages to achieve a unique selling point in the flooded deathcore sector with a variety of ideas, gadgets and numerous influences.
