In France, a teacher showed her class a painting of naked women. This made some students uncomfortable and escalated into an argument. Now the teachers are on strike because they fear parallels to the case of the murdered Samuel Paty.

  • At a school west of Paris, teachers stopped work because a teacher was threatened by Muslim students and parents.
  • She had discussed the painting “Diana and Actaeon” by the Italian artist Guiseppe Cesari in art class.
  • Five naked women can be seen on it.
  • Many students turned away and condemned the women’s nudity as an insult to their religion.
  • The case brings back memories of the case of the murdered teacher Samuel Paty.

A row broke out in France following a teacher showed her class a 17th-century Renaissance painting during art class.

The painting was reportedly shown to students aged 12 and 13. “Diana and Actaeon” is a story from Greek mythology. It shows the naked goddess Diana and four naked companions and is located in the Louvre Museum in Paris.

Accusations of racism spread on social media

Some students apparently averted their gaze in class. They felt insulted and said, according to the media, that they were “shocked”. Some of the students also claimed that the teacher made racist comments during a class discussion.

The teacher’s name and the allegation that she had made racist comments towards Muslim students were then spread on social media. There are said to have been threats once morest the teacher.

This raised fears that she might become a target – as was the case with the murdered teacher Samuel Paty.

The teachers at the Jacques Cartier School in Issou, west of Paris, refused to work yesterday in solidarity with the teacher.

Education Minister Gabriel Attal visited the school personally. He explained that students who made false claims regarding the teacher on social media would be punished.

Memories of the Samuel Paty murder case

The crisis comes following a French court sentenced six teenagers on Friday for their roles in the 2020 beheading of Samuel Paty outside a secondary school near Paris.

These helped identify the teacher as a radicalized Islamist. Paty, a 47-year-old history and geography teacher, was stabbed just 15 kilometers from Issou.

As the Times reports, the teachers in Issou are now worried that they too might be attacked.

In an email sent to parents, teachers said they were exercising their right to be absent from class. The situation at the school is “extremely difficult”; The teachers report “noticeable discomfort” and an “increase in acts of violence and threats” that they experience on a daily basis.

“We feel like we are in danger,” one teacher told the Times. “We are supported by our direct superiors, but not from higher authorities.”
