The Samuel Montembeault contract file and that of the ménage à trois are linked. The Canadian certainly does not want to let go of a goalkeeper without having the assurance that Monty is there to stay.
Otherwise, the CH would be in trouble next summer.
This is one of the reasons that currently blocks a transaction. The lack of depth behind Montembeault, Jake Allen and Cayden Primeau is also a factor, obviously.
Jakub Dobes despite progress, but the CH does not want to be one injury away from having to recall him.
And obviously, if Kent Hughes doesn’t have his price, he’s not going to trade a goalie just for fun. We know how much he wants to maximize the market value of his players…
This puts pressure on the goalkeepers… as well as on their coach Éric Raymond, who has to work with a staff 50% more imposing than usual.

Obviously, it would be easy for the Canadian to say that Samuel Montembeault has value and that he can bring in big money on the transaction market as a rental player.
It would also be easy to say that with a good contract in his pocket, he would become attractive to another club. But clearly, Montembeault is part of the club’s plans at the moment.
A training that wants to go get it is better to get up early.
All this to say that, as David Pagnotta points outif the CH wants to extend Samuel Montembeault’s contract, it is not to “exchange him better” followingwards: it is to keep him.
From earlier:
• #GoKingsGo might roll full season with current roster
• Byfield extension negotiations haven’t started
• #GoHabsGo & Montembeault continue contract talks
• New sports drink sponsor for NHL coming?
• Kane & hip resurfacing concerns— David Pagnotta (@TheFourthPeriod) November 28, 2023
Note that Pagnotta mentions the fact that the discussions, without being over, are going well between the Canadian and the Mauricie goalkeeper.
He also adds that it is Jake Allen who, at the right price, is – unsurprisingly – likely to leave. That said, you know as well as I that his performance means that he is not the easiest to trade.
Not to mention his contract of $3.85 million per year until 2025.
I can’t wait to see how the file ends, but it is clear that seeing Allen win a few games soon would not do any harm to the Canadian and his management.
