Earlier this month, we brought you the list of the last Avengers in activity since the end of the third stage from Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), marked by the events of the films Avengers : Endgame et Spider-Man : Far From Homereleased in 2019. But as a reminder, the third phase began in 2016, with the film Captain America : Civil War, which notably introduced Tom Holland’s Spider-Man. However, if the film had brought together many cult characters from l’univers Marvelthere is one in particular who remained on the sidelines, to the chagrin of his interpreter.

A real success at the worldwide box office, Captain America : Civil War is known for being the movie where superheroes split, with on one side those who were in favor of the Sokovia Accords, like Tony Stark for example, and on the other those who were against, like Captain America. This difference of opinion over the future of the superhero group thus resulted in one of the most iconic battles in the franchise, bringing together almost all the key characters of the era. I say almost, because there is one who was missing and who, even today, regrets not having been present at that time.
Samuel L. Jackson was thus invited to a round table organized by Hollywood Reporterwhere we could find other actors of the MCU such as Oscar Isaac, Michael Keaton or Tom Hiddleston. The conversation ended up being about regrets and paths not taken, and for Jackson, the actor is still convinced that his character, Nick Fury, should have weighed in the battle between Captain America and Iron Man. He said:
A moment of decline for you is a moment of rise. But all of those things are there and you have the opportunity to do them, and they give you that leeway to feel comfortable in them. Once they see you and know who you are, it gives everyone a chance to come in and bring their personality. That’s what happened with the movies Avengers, they all had different personalities, and they were able to blossom once the initial film was completed. The original film was meant to introduce these people and show what things they can do. Now here’s how they interact and it turns out they’re not all that nice. I yelled at them, and I yell at them again for Civil War, because I was like, “How can the kids fight without Nick Fury showing up? What’s going on here? Everybody go to their room.” But they didn’t need me for that. Although I think so.
Whereas Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) and subsequent films did not elaborate on SHIELD’s role in the MCU after the events of Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014), admittedly it might seem strange that Nick Fury didn’t appear when some of Earth’s greatest heroes were about to face off, especially since he is the founder of the Avengers. Fortunately for Jackson, his character would appear many times thereafter, with important roles such as in Captain Marvel (2019) or Spider-Man : Far From Home.
