Samuel Garcia still “trusts” Tesla

MEXICO CITY (EFE).— Nuevo Leon Governor Samuel Garcia said that “everything is in order” for the installation of Tesla’s megafactory in this state in the north of the country, and considered that the announcement by tycoon Elon Musk about its possible cancellation “is an electoral issue.”

“We have everything in order. The purchase of the land is registered with the federal Ministry of Economy, the incentive project is registered in Nuevo León,” said García upon arriving at a meeting in the Mexican capital with the president-elect, Claudia Sheinbaum, and other governors of states in the northeast of the country.

Garcia said that all preparations are complete to begin construction and said Musk may have mentioned the cancellation of the mega plant due to the proximity of the US elections.

“I truly believe that this is an election issue that will end between now and November. Yesterday I even saw an interview with (Republican presidential candidate) Donald Trump in which he got into a cybertruck and congratulated Elon Musk for that truck,” he said, referring to the vehicle that is planned to be manufactured at the plant. Musk, according to the former US president, will interview him on Monday, a situation that we reported more extensively on page 3 of this same section.

García insisted that the project is moving forward and that Nuevo León is ready to begin as soon as Tesla decides to take the final step, since “everything is signed” and “what is missing is for the company to begin construction, with money and cash flow.”

“What I ask of Nuevo León is to have faith that the project will happen and that all the paperwork is ready so that when Elon Musk says (that) it is going ahead, we start,” he said.

García recalled that he was invited by Musk to Austin (Texas) “and before the shareholders meeting, he (Musk) presented the project and the amount of the investment.”

He therefore insisted that the pause announced by Musk on July 24 was to “see who wins” the elections in the US “and what measures he will take against automakers in Mexico.”

Two weeks ago, tycoon Elon Musk announced that he would halt construction of the plant because candidate and former US President Donald Trump (2017-2021) threatened to impose tariffs on vehicles made in Mexico.

In this regard, García pointed out that “Trump pointed out (possible tariffs on) Chinese, non-American, European, etc. automakers.”

“So, I really have a lot of faith that it will happen, and since it is private money, we have to wait for the company to make a decision and I hope that they will go ahead with it very soon,” he said.

Musk, a Trump supporter, announced in 2023 the construction of a Tesla “gigafactory” in the northern city of Monterrey, with an investment of between 5 and 10 billion dollars and projected to be the largest of its kind in the world, but it has been postponed.
