Are you looking for a new smartphone, versatile, comfortable in all areas without needing to reach the peaks of what a smartphone can do at stratospheric budgets? You are in the right place. In this spring of 2023, while a lot of manufacturers have renewed their range (which makes it possible to directly include their best new proposals in this selection, but also makes you think regarding the possibility of integrating top-of-the-range models dated a year or two ago but whose price has just dropped), here is our selection of the 5 best terminals of the moment, at less than half a thousand euros. Let’s go !
The reference, but imperfect: the Samsung Galaxy A54 5G
Available since March 15, 2023, it is the flagship of the most important range of the most important player on the market. If we talk a lot regarding the Galaxy S and Z, it is indeed the A range that drains, by far, the most sales. Within it, the 2023 vintage offers an excellent Galaxy A54. Excellent, but not without flaws.
We greatly appreciate its very qualitative design which squints strongly towards the S23 (glass back, impeccable finish, 120 Hz Super Amoled screen), its vibrant colors (special mention to lime green or purple, for those who wish to get rid of black conventional) and the photo rendering that its triple dorsal sensor, perfectly integrated into the shell, offers in good light conditions. Even if, at this level of the range, we are not talking regarding the most powerful of processors (it is an in-house chip, Exynos, which powers the A54 and not the latest production from Qualcomm), the rendering is extremely fluid for daily tasks. , video sessions or even gaming (but not too demanding).
On the other hand, on the autonomy side, despite the presence of a large 5,000 mAh battery, we are clearly not facing here the best proposal on the market. The A54 sees its battery drain relatively quickly, and is unfortunately only compatible with wireless charging at 25 W (where competition, particularly Chinese, has made 65W a standard and sometimes goes up to 120W, which allows the terminal to be recharged in a few minutes). We are therefore faced with a device that does not go a day without requiring to be recharged, and always required more than an hour to go back to 100% autonomy… Still on the battery side, we deplore the absence of a charger in the box (only a USB-C to USB-C cable is included).
However, we are left with a smartphone with excellent performance, well designed, with a screen and a very pleasant software overlay on a daily basis. But not faced with an irresistible proposition either…

Xiaomi Redmi Note 12 Pro + 5G: the mid-range emperor?
6.67-inch OLED panel refreshed at 120 Hz, 200 megapixel photo sensor (unheard of in this price category), 5G, 256 GB of storage, super-fast wireless charging (120W) with supplied charger, design in the air time: it has everything, this hot Note 12 Pro + from Redmi, under the Xiaomi brand even more accessible? On paper, yes. In particular, an excellent screen and a really efficient fast charge. But the downside is that the additional cost it claims compared to the Pro version (and not Pro +), it is mainly explained by its 200 Megapixel sensor. Which is mainly there for the marketing argument, the rendering of shots of this type not being particularly more desirable than the others. Especially since you are not going to take all your shots in 200 Mp (they would weigh far too heavy). If you can get away with it (and see the speed of fast charging drop to 67W, which is already very good), the Pro version at €399 will be perfect for you. But in both cases, here is perhaps the emperor of this category that Xiaomi likes to dominate so much, that of the mid-range.

OnePlus Nord CE 3 Lite: the definition of a good little smartphone!
Well, here we are facing a smartphone that you will pay 320 €. So quite far from some, at 450 or 500 €, mentioned here. Let’s have the good in mind. However, it would be wrong to neglect this particularly clever smartphone, which incorporates features that some of its counterparts that cost more than 100 € more than it shun out of pretension.
On the good side: we appreciate the audacious but successful design of the terminal (a plastic that quite cleverly takes on the appearance of glass), the 67 W wireless fast charge, and the 108 megapixel photo sensor. The 5,000 mAh battery also allows you to see ahead. On the other hand, at this price, it will be necessary to be satisfied with an LCD screen and not OLED (6.7 inches) IPS Full HD +which still has the merit of having a 120 Hz refresh rate. The humble processor, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 695 (supported by 8 GB of RAM all the same) does not make it a racing beast, but provides the essential brilliantly nevertheless, unless you are not too demanding.
In short: at less than 330 euros, it will be difficult to find better than this audacious OnePlus, the first marketed at such a low price by the Chinese brand (which also owns Oppo). In short: the definition of a good surprise and a “good little smartphone”!

Nothing Phone (1): a mobile apart, although a little overpriced
We rewind for the distracted: Nothing is a brand founded by Carl Pei, creator of OnePlus. And the Nothing Phone (1), announced sometime last summer, was probably one of the sensations of 2022 in this crowded mid-range market. Not for its technical sheet: if the Nothing is well endowed for a mobile under 500 euros, it does nothing fundamentally better (or faster) than its competitors. On the other hand, its real differentiating argument is its appearance: with its back which simultaneously plays on simplicity (even nudity) and modernity (with its LED system, entitled Glyph Interface); Nothing is offered which is very rare on the smartphone market where references are enquillent: a real face, recognizable from the start. All with a very appreciable quality of finish, and a beautiful (large) screen, which will however lack a bit of brightness. The photo sensor is not the best on the market either, however, you have a nice integrated wireless charge, while the Nothing (1) is compatible with wireless charging.
A mobile for those who want one like no other. But beware: the Nothing (2) is expected in a few weeks. Perhaps it will be wise to wait, either to see what the new model is on board, or to bet on a price drop from (1)…

New Apple for less than 500 euros: yes, but at the price of certain concessions, with the iPhone SE 2022
An iPhone, new, less than €500 in cash? Not easy. But not impossible: if it is officially priced at 519 €, the iPhone SE 2022 can be found well, on several e-commerce sites, for less than half a thousand euros. The good news is that it’s not a junk iPhone: it does ship a hardware and software experience similar to an iPhone 13, but under the chassis of an iPhone 8. What’s more, it is clearly one of the best in the (non-negligible) category of those who don’t like to handle a device that is too big. With its 4.7-inch screen, it will appeal to fans of compact devices.
On the other hand, there will be concessions to be made: its design is clearly dated, its storage capacity limited to 64 GB and in terms of the quality of the shots taken, it cannot compete with current Android proposals, even cheaper. It’s obviously not the best iPhone around. But for those who absolutely want the iOS experience (new) while not wanting to blow their budget, it’s a proposal that remains to be considered.
