Samsung would shamelessly copy the iPhone 14 with this function

Like the iPhone 14 before them, the Samsung Galaxy S23 would be on the verge of offering communications (presumably backup) through a satellite link.

After Huawei on the Mate 50 / Mate 50 Prothen Apple with its iPhone 14, Samsung and its future Galaxy S23 would also be able to offer a satellite connection to their users. This is what we learn today from an article byETNews. The Korean media reports that Samsung would rely in this case on the Iridium satellite telephone system to allow satellite communications on its new generation of high-end smartphones, expected early next year.

According to ETNews, whose information is only slightly substantiated (we will therefore take it with a grain of salt), Samsung has been working on this project for two years and is taking advantage of the network of 66 low-orbit communication satellites operated by Iridium.

The Galaxy S23 would also look to the higher echelons

Like its competitors, the Korean giant notably had to tackle the problem of miniaturizing the antenna to allow satellite communication from a smartphone. This reduction in size would mean sending text messages only, and sparingly. Understand that the speeds would be too low to allow voice communications, for example.

Apple has partnered with another company specializing in satellite communications to offer this feature: Global Star. On the iPhone 14, however, only requests for emergency help are allowed, while on Huawei’s Mate 50 the sending of messages by satellite is possible through, this time, the Chinese Beidou system.

Still, South Korea is a small country in area, which makes satellite communications irrelevant for local users. ETNews also recognizes that, on site, this functionality should be little used. With it, Samsung is mainly looking to raise itself to the same level as its competitors, while offering a function that will be useful to the most adventurous travelers and to inhabitants of large countries… where getting lost in the middle of nature, far from any mobile network, is arrived faster than south of the 38th parallel.
