Two manufacturers of photo sensors share a very large part of the market: Sony and Samsung. At the start of the year, the latter launched a 200 Mpx sensor. This seems nothing next to what the Korean would work on: a 440 Mpx photo sensor.

In January, Samsung presented the Isocell HP2, a 200 Mpx photo sensor. This is the one found in the Galaxy S23 Ultra, its flagship. What if the Galaxy S25 Ultra had a sensor… of 440 Mpx? While it’s unlikely, it’s not impossible. Moreover, the company had indicated a few years ago that it was considering 600 Mpx sensors.
Samsung would work on a 440 Mpx sensor
It’s the leaker Revegnus who shared some details regarding Samsung’s plans, in a post on X, the new name for Twitter. We learn of the potential existence of three Samsung sensors, which will be mass-produced in the second half of 2024. »
Among them, there would be the Isocell HU1, with a definition of 440 Mpx, the size of which is not yet known. As we are talking regarding a mid-2024 production, the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra will not be equipped with this sensor, since it is expected for February 2024. However, the question arises for the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, which would be released in any logic in February 2025.
Another hypothesis would be that the Isocell HU1 would not be dedicated to smartphones. It might very well be used in cars, for driving assistance for example.
Samsung’s first 1-inch type sensor might enter the race
Alongside it would be the 50 Mpx (1.6 μm) Isocell GN6 as well as the 200 Mpx (0.6 μm) Isocell HP7. According to SamMobile, the first would be the continuation of the Isocell GN1 and Isocell GN2, with an enlarged size. Enough to do more pixel binning, a technology for assembling pixels, in order to remove digital noise and offer brighter photos. Note that the pixel size of the Isocell GN2 was 1.4 μm.

More importantly, this would be Samsung’s first 1-inch type sensor. For the moment, only Sony manufactures it on a large scale with its IMX989 sensor, which is found in particular in the Sony Xperia 1 V. The battle between the two players might then intensify on high-end smartphones.
As for the Isocell HP7, it would be the sequel to the 200 Mpx Isocell HP2, found in the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Its pixel size would also be similar. ForSamMobile once more, this sensor would be dedicated to high and mid-range models.
