Samsung would activate on another 200 Mpx sensor for even sharper photos

Samsung has reportedly started working on a new 200MP photo sensor for smartphones. The latter promises to be a successor to the ISOCELL HP1, which was announced last year, but which Samsung has still not installed on board any device.

Will this new 200 Mpx sensor have more luck than the old one? In any case, we must hope so. We learn this week from the Dutch site GalaxyClub what Samsung would work on a new one photo sensor of 200 Mpx: the ISOCELL HP3. The latter will probably take over from the ISOCELL HP1 sensor, announced in September 2021, but which Samsung has not yet used on board a smartphone. This module of all superlatives had however been anticipated on the Galaxy S22 Ultrabut Samsung’s latest flagship is ultimately content with a « simple » 108 MP main sensor.

While waiting for the Galaxy S23 Ultra, which might possibly take advantage of the ISOCELL HP3 next year, it is possible that this new sensor will first appear on a high-end smartphone from Motorola or Xiaomi. In the past, Samsung had already installed certain premium sensors on devices launched by its customers, before sharing them with its own flagships.

200 Mpx for ever more successful pixel-binning

If the 200 Mpx resolution may seem exaggerated at first glance to obtain beautiful photos on a smartphone, it would actually serve to drastically improve the quality of the pixel-binning on our devices. As a reminder, this method makes it possible to combine several pixels into a single brighter pixel. Far from being new, this technique makes it possible to achieve brighter shots, containing more information and details, especially when the light conditions are less good.

As pointed out PhoneArena, the recent Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 is already capable of exploiting a 200 Mpx main sensor to extract high-flying shots and 8K videos, for example. On paper, the ball is therefore in Samsung’s court so that we can take advantage of a first 200 Mpx sensor on future Galaxy S.

Note however that we do not know for the moment what more the ISOCELL HP3 will offer compared to its predecessor. Given the reduced age gap between the two sensors (the ISOCELL HP1 was unveiled less than a year ago), we imagine that Samsung is above all looking to slightly refine what had been done. A beginning of response should take shape in the next few months, because for the time being, the ISOCELL HP3 is not yet official.
