Samsung is at IFA to present its first PC screen equipped with an Oled panel. The specifications sheet is very nice and the product natively integrates cloud gaming.
In the field of video games, Samsung offers screens who know how to stand out from the competition. We think in particular to the gigantic Odyssey G9 and its 49-inch 32:9 format. This time the manufacturer is at l’IFA to unveil a first in its catalog: an Oled PC screen.
like deja vu
The spec sheet is superb. The firm incorporates a 34-inch OLED panel in 21:9 format with a definition of 3440 x 1440 pixels and a refresh rate of 175 Hz. The DCI-P3 is covered at 99.3%, with VESA DisplayHDR 400 True certification Black and FreeSync Premium.
If you feel like you’ve read this somewhere before, that’s normal. It is exactly the same characteristics than the Alienware 34 QD-Oled AW3423DW display which we tested this year and which amazed us with its qualities. Not surprising when you know that Alienware had gone for a QD-Oled panel developed by Samsung Display.
Here, Samsung Electronics went knocking on the same door, with an Oled panel “designed in partnership with Qantum Dot”. The brand does not use the term QD-Oled to talk regarding its monitors, but it’s just like.
An intelligent system and integrated cloud gaming
The good surprise, and a way for Samsung to differentiate itself from Alienware, is in the integration of a real operating system into the monitor. Like the manufacturer’s Smart Monitors, the Samsung Odyssey G8 Oled screen integrates Samsung Smart Hub and Gaming Hub.
The first allows access to SVOD services such as Amazon Prime, Netflix or video services such as YouTube and those of operators (OTT). It also integrates a SmartThings IoT hub to control home automation.
The Samsung Gaming Hub allows you to natively offer the most popular cloud gaming services on the market: Nvidia GeForce Now and Xbox Cloud Gaming. So you can play Fortnite and all the games in the catalog with a simple controller, directly on the screen without using a PC or consoles.
Only intriguing point of the monitor, its connectivity. Indeed, despite the necessarily imposing size of the product, Samsung has chosen to integrate a Micro HDMI (2.1) and a miniDP 1.4 in addition to a USB-C port. We wonder regarding the first two choices, far from the classic DisplayPort and HDMI that we usually find on monitors of this caliber. It will be necessary to go through dedicated cables or adapters.
What is the price?
The Samsung Odyssey Oled G8 will be available from Q4 2022 worldwide. The brand did not reveal the price of the device.
Quite surprisingly, the 1299 euros requested by Alienware for its screen were very acceptable in view of the qualities of the screen. The brand was also struggling to meet demand: the screen was out of stock throughout the year.
We will see if Samsung makes the same price choices and if the Korean brand can better follow demand.
