Samsung SDI is promoting the second electric vehicle battery joint venture with Stellantis. The two companies announced on the 24th (local time) that they signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to build the second plant of Star Plus Energy, a joint venture established in Indiana last year. It plans to build an electric vehicle battery factory with an annual capacity of 34 gigawatt hours (GWh), with the goal of starting operation in 2027. Site location is under review.

Plant 1 in Kokomo, Indiana, which is currently under construction, will be built with a production capacity of 33GWh, which is an increase of 10GWh from the originally planned 23GWh per year, and will start operation in the first quarter of 2025. If the second plant is added, the total electric vehicle battery capacity that Samsung SDI can supply to Stellantis in the US reaches 67GWh.

Choi Yun-ho, CEO of Samsung SDI, said, “Last year, we established a firm foothold in the North American electric vehicle market by establishing a joint venture with Stellantis.
